Curriculum

One-on-One Coaching

Students typically spend 6-8 hours (2 coaching calls and 3-4 drafts), but some students use additional video calls and reviews as needed.

Part 1: Identify what you'll write about

  • You (1 hour): Use Prompt's Application Plan to learn what colleges will find most compelling about you and start brainstorming your content
  • Video call with your coach (1 hour): Complete brainstorming and align on your best content (which you'll use across all of your essays)

Part 2: Write your Common App Essay first draft

  • You (30 min): Draft an outline for your Common App Essay using Prompt's Common App Outlining Tool
  • Video call with your coach (1 hour): Discuss and align on your outline. Start your introduction
  • You (1 hour): Complete your first draft and submit it to your coach for feedback

Part 3: Revise and finalize your Common App Essay

  • Your coach: Provide detailed feedback on how to improve the content and structure of your first draft
  • You (1 hour): Revise your essay based on the feedback and submit it to your coach
  • Your coach: Provide detailed feedback on further content and structure improvements while also beginning to make suggestions to refine sentences for readability, clarity, and flow
  • You (1 hour): Revise your essay based on the feedback and submit it to your coach
  • Your coach: Provide commentary on any remaining content and structure improvements while primarily focusing on suggestions for sentence-level improvements
  • You (30 min): Revise your essay based on the feedback one final time and send it to your coach for a final check
  • Your coach: Takes a final check of your essay for any remaining improvements to make (e.g., checking grammar and readability)
  • You (15 min): Give your essay a couple of final reads and relax – you're done!

Meet some of our coaches

Semilore: I'm an English PhD student and Presidential Fellow at Brown. As an undergrad, I went to Stanford where I earned my Bachelor of Arts with Honors in African & African-American Studies and Comparative Literature. When I’m not busy in my department, I work at the Writing Center as a Writing Associate, and love helping students learn how to express themselves!

Reina: I am a playwright and educator. My plays, which usually contain magic and sometimes contain science, have been seen across the country, including at Rorschach Theatre in DC, the Vortex in Austin, and the 2013 NNPN National New Play Showcase. I am a Michener Fellow, winner of the 2014 KCACTF TYA Prize, finalist for the Terrence McNally Prize and the recipient of an Interact 20/20 Commission.

Ellen: I'm a full-time writer of fiction and essays who's passionate about teaching and mentoring. I studied Comparative Literature and Creative Writing at Princeton University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with High Honors, then went on to get my MFA in Fiction at Brooklyn College. As a Princeton-in-Asia fellow, I taught literature at a Thai university before returning to the states to teach writing in a college setting. My work appears regularly in magazines and journals, and has been recognized with national fellowships, government grants, and literary awards. I love helping students express their stories and selves on the page!

Tyné: I completed my undergraduate and master’s degrees at Dartmouth College, where I studied the role of music in cultures around the world. Since 2010, I have released five full-length albums, and have performed across the U.S. and internationally. The arts have opened doors to some exciting experiences, like performing at the Kennedy Center and delivering two TEDx Talks. I love guiding students in crafting their story and finding their unique voice!

See what families have to say

"I came into this process having already written a draft of a personal statement that I felt good about. I consider myself a strong writer but I know that college essay writing is very different from English class assignments. When I started working with [my coach], we built out a whole new personal statement that I felt made more sense with a clearer purpose. After submitting my first drafts, I wasn't expecting so much feedback and it was overwhelming at first. But when I looked into the details, the comments definitely helped me make it more concise and organized, and the process taught me a lot about how I can improve my writing. I don't think my main essays would have been so polished otherwise."

- Mackenzie, Student

"I am impressed by the amazing turnaround time and punctual nature of Prompt's work. The experience was very very helpful for my son. [The coach] would ask really pointed questions to dig deeper on his content and empower him to write genuine essays that were true to his voice and experiences. It was everything that we hoped this process would provide. Overall, I appreciate Prompt and [the coach]'s work so much!"

- Mara, Parent

"They were simply wonderful! Personalized and attentive. They truly care about whatever you are sending them."

- Ximena, Student

"The person who worked with my two sons went above and beyond. He checked in frequently to make sure they were moving along in the process and was there for a Friday call and last minute edits over the weekend leading up to the ED deadline, which was much appreciated. He was also very positive and encouraging. Would highly recommend Prompt!"

- Laney, Parent

“The great guidance my daughter received was invaluable and helped her to have the confidence that she was submitting her strongest essays.”

- Daryl, Parent

“My son started the college application process with little interest or enthusiasm. Prompt was the perfect platform to guide his essay writing and hone his skills. With each feedback he received from Prompt, he was given positive encouragement, boosting his confidence. The Prompt platform also makes organizing the complicated process much easier with reminders for deadlines and essay questions from different colleges easily accessible. I have recommended this company to friends and family!”

- Carol, Parent

"The process with Prompt has been really smooth and really helpful. My essay has gone through a lot of improvement from where I started, and I am very satisfied with how it turned out."

- Ethan, Student
